August 2013

It's a grey start to August, after a record breaking dry July, but summer is far from over!

Vancouver's beautiful summer nights...

I'll be leaving Vancouver Online with my final post before September, as I'll be away for most of August! Till then, here are some suggestions on what to do before summer is over:

Honda Celebration of Light

Summer means the season of fireworks for Vancouver, and the Celebration of Light is at the centre of it.

via Celebration of Light Blog

3 countries are participating in the annual fireworks competition this year: UK, Canada, and Thailand. The event attracts hundreds of thousands of people around the world every year, and it's shaping to be another great year for the event.

Celebration of Light:

  • July 27 - United Kingdom
  • July 31 - Canada
  • August 3 - Thailand
The Red Bull Airshow will also make its return to the Celebration of Light on July 31st and August 3rd. The Airshow amazed crowds back in the 2011 Celebration of Light.

Another thing happening along with the Airshow is SHOREfest 2013, a concert presented by SHORE 104.3FM.

Worried about the crowd? The YVR Observation Deck and The Keg Lounge offer seating for those who don't want to compete for a place to watch the fireworks. Tickets are available here: http://www.ticketstonight.ca/includes/events/index.cfm?action=displayDetail&eventid=7038

Vancouver's Lively Summer Streets

With organizations like VIVA Vancouver, Vancouver streets are never dull.

In efforts to reduce car usage and enhance sense of community, Vancouver has been sprucing up streets and public spaces for the past couple of years.

Here's what you can expect for the summer of 2013:

Viva Granville:

Viva Vancouver brings events to Granville St and closes it off to vehicles every weekend in the summer until Labour Day:

Carnaval del Sol: July 6-7
HUB Bike Rodeo: July 13 & August 10
MoV Upcycled Urbanism: July 13
Swing Dancing: July 14 & August 4
Five Hole For Food: July 20
Telus Go Cafe: July 20-21
Axe Capoeira: July 28
TaiwanFest: August 31 - Sept 2
QR Code Treasure Hunt: July 6 - August 25

Robson St Seating Installation

Started in 2011, VIVA Vancouver has been closing off the 800 block of Robson St to pedestrians only for seating installations. Changing every year, with the "urban beach" in 2011 and Pop Rocks in 2012, this year it's Corduroy Road.

Sunday Afternoon Salsa @ Robson Square

Free salsa dance lessons every Sunday until August 25. Great experience and great way of having fun and meeting new people!

Parklet Pilot Program

VIVA Vancouver has invited businesses to build their own parklets this year, which are parking spaces that have been transformed into "mini plazas". These parklets remove parking spaces but really enhance the atmosphere of the sidewalks around Vancouver.

Rainbow Crosswalk @ Davie/Bute

In celebration of the LGBT community, Vancouver will be painting a permanent rainbow crosswalk at the Davie/Bute intersection, just in time for Vancouver's pride festivities.

Keys to the Street

Launched by CityStudio in collaboration with the City of Vancouver, there are now 4 public pianos around the City of Vancouver, inviting the public to come try it out, whether you're a musician or not. This project was inspired by similar projects in other cities like in Montreal, Toronto, and London.

Every Thursday, mid-August to end of September

Enjoy the festive atmosphere of Vancouver by wandering the streets this summer!

Canada Day 2013 (video)

I was at the Canada Day celebrations at Jack Poole Plaza on Canada Day, and wow, was the atmosphere amazing! Lots of fun; come down next year if you didn't make it!

Of course, there were other great events in honour of Canada Day around Vancouver...but sadly, I can't be in multiple places at once :) Send in pictures of your Canada Day 2013 experiences to share if you can!

Capilano Suspension Bridge

Explore North Vancouver's canyons in a dramatic way at Capilano Suspension Bridge...

Capilano Suspension Bridge is great for all lovers of nature, with boardwalks cutting through places normally inaccessible. From the Treetops to the side of cliffs and 230ft above the the Capilano River, this attraction is a way of discovering nature like you never have before.

The bridge looks fine when looking across from one side. Different story, however, when you actually cross it.

I found myself stumbling and grabbing onto bridge in my slow journey across the canyon...but lots of fun, I must admit

Across the bridge is Capilano Suspension Bridge's EdgeWalk, which gives you nice views of the canyon "on the edge", as well as Treetops Adventure, which lets you connect with nature on a higher level (in more ways than one).

Back on the other side is CliffWalk, Capilano Suspension Bridge's newest addition. Impressive views, if you can handle the height.

Capilano Suspension Bridge brings nature to you with more than just "a walk in the park". Through the unique ways of connecting with nature, I also picked up a couple of neat things about our native land. I'll refrain from spoiling the details and let you find out more when you visit :)

For more information, visit http://www.capbridge.com.

**BC residents can get unlimited admission for one year for the price of one day's admission!
